They're unpredictable. That's why people follow them, bet on them, and watch them in bars.

On the first day of the statistics class I'm taking this semester, the professor was differentiating between probabilities that we can mathematically determine, and probabilities that are merely educated guesses. As an example, she used baseball.

"Usually, I use the Cards for this example, but it looks like they're out of it this season. The probability that the Phillies win the world series…"

Before Glory Days (in that same statistics class,) Danielle and I were discussing the coming tournament. People, strategies, who's going, and what has happened in previous years. Last year's Glory Days was awful. Games were decided by the flip. You had up-hail and down-hail points. By stacking our upwind line, and failing a thousand times before we succeeded, we had the only upwind break of the day to win the finals. (Then the weather cleared up and looked positively sunny in the obligatory picture.) I suggested that we didn't have the depth this year to do the same thing, if we even made winning this fall season tournament a goal.

Meanwhile, the stats professor publicly apologized to all the "die-hard Cardinals fans" who never gave up on the season. They had just won the National League title and would be playing the world series against Texas. (St Louis vs. Texas. This sounds oddly familiar.) They crushed Texas as we watched in the hotel on Saturday night, and last night staged a fantastic comeback to tie the series at 3s. (One of the cool similarities between ultimate and baseball is that it's (almost) never too late to make a comeback. There's no "impossible" until there's three outs. Or Texas scores 15 points. Or whatever.)

The Cardinals are down two, at bat in the bottom of the first.

So Glory Days…

We win our pool on Saturday (5 games), beating Ball State, a split Northwestern (by shutting down their handles), Miami Ohio, Central Michigan (with lots of good plays from rookies), and Truman (who also have strong Cardinals loyalty). Apologies for not remembering more. 5 games is a lot.

Sunday, we started playing at 1, which is absurdly late for a morning person like me. Our first game was against Purdue, who beat the other half of Northwestern in the quarters. I remember playing Purdue at last year's Whitesmoke, and they were significantly better this time around. We had a strong start, having named our starting line "Dumbledore's Army," and took half handily, before playing a close second half. We eventually won that game, but it was kinda sloppy.

The finals were against Indiana. They were fairly good, but only had a few key players. (Pink socks and number 99 were often strategically allocated on defensive points.) I would guess they had 11-13 players, while we had 18. That makes a difference when you have a 5 game Saturday. And, here's the being-wrong part, we won because we had depth. Apparently I'm no good at making objective predictions. ("If I'm on the starting line, we must be in a pretty sorry state.") So I will refrain from making any more predictions, especially self-denegrating ones.

We're the two-year running champions of Glory Days.

And the Cardinals won the world series.

Harry Potter and the Nationals Highlight Video

WUWU - Nationals 2011 from Mars Fish Productions on Vimeo.
Now watch it again, and check out those mountains.

Dear WUWU,

In the future, get a less excitable cameraman. This is the "Two WU's" 2011 Covenant. It was a document created to unify what the team wanted to pursue in all aspects of the competitive season. Something as tangible as this document made me want to see just how WUWU was going to display their visible reminder of the goals to be reached...thus, the Covenant Competition. "How are you going to see your goals every day?" Because of my artistic background I felt qualified to offer my comments below and also, the winners are revealed...

Sam: Cheery...the wall color that is. You have a very nice display of quality photos and what better way to define team unity than with photos of the team! Bonus points for a larger "Two Wu's" addition.
Naomi: Ah....birds. Everything is better with a bird on it. Coming from someone who literally has a bird tattooed on her body, you get bonus points. Bonus points for painters tape because I used it on my covenant too.

Julie: Classic. There really is nothing more Ultimate player than Frisbees on the wall. I can't give you bonus points on creativity but I tip my hat to you for making a solid choice in display...you can't go wrong there.

Sarah: Again, the quality photos. Very nice. Symmetry will always be pleasing so bonus points for design layout.

Theresa: I simply have an addiction to scrabble thus, bonus points for banana-grams. Your display, although self-proclaimed as "esoteric" wins more bonus points for being personal and individual and for taking the entirety of a bulletin board.

______________________________________________________________

Beep, bop, beep beep...bonus points tabulated for the participants and here are the standings:

Theresa wins for an individual and creative display mixing text as well as visual clues to remind her of the feelings of WUWU love. Cynthia is second for a very well designed display...one which a person could envision creating hundreds of multiples and plastering the campus with...covenant displays campus-wide anyone?

I give an honorable mention to Kami who did not submit a covenant (although wrote it) but did proclaim she "...had this fantastic idea to stitch the covenant onto my boyfriend's chest so that I would a.) see it often (when he shows off that oh so chiseled body) and b.) maybe even lay my head upon it at night (get a kind of osmosis-effect going on). Someday I'll be something much more.

Just so you know, doing a tournament write up in children's storybook format is much more difficult than it seems. "Suddenly, WUWU heard the squeaky air-horn blow. They were in soft cap! This meant that they took the current highest score, added two, and then continued playing to that number of points..." It just doesn't work.

We went into sectionals seeded first, and our first game of the day was against SLU. Though they lost many of their big players from last year, this was still a huge one for us. In typical WUWU fashion, we get somewhat lost, go on a wild goose chase to our fields, and still end up one of the first teams to start warmup. (As much as we moaned and complained when Chung started hour-long warmups last spring, it's really helped us.)

So the fields: Buder park is legit a floodplane of some tributary of the Mississippi river. The grass was cut nice and level, but underneath, the ground was a sprained ankle waiting to happen. Also, instead of upwind-downwind, there were uphill downhill points.

The SLU game. We did a pretty good job of coming into this game with energy, but it dropped off for a while in the middle. We were down by 2 at half. SLU was playing in a way that it's easiest to describe as "like SLU." Very aware downfield, running through everything both on O and D, and calling stuff. (Note: We generally don't call stuff as much as we should.) Points in this game went very quickly, and we encountered for the first time the "win by two" thing. Cap did come on, so we won by two, at 12-10. (We turned it back on for the end of this game. Whoo us!)

Next we played Oklahoma State. If anyone remembers anything from this game, feel free to jump in here.

Third game, after half an hour more than we usually have between games, (as in, half an hour) we played John Brown University. The biggest challenge in this game was to play to our potential, and not to freak out when we "should" be winning points but weren't. But actually, we freaked out. This is where Halfmann's presence and maturity on the field would have helped us. We fought for this game (I think this is when DIP D was first brought up) but lost pretty decisively at 11-8. Reality check time.

(Incase some non Wash U person is reading this, Halfbeast is out of eligibility because she went to a clinic her freshman year. (It did not help that she found out/told us all this on April Fools day. I was waiting for a "just kidding guys! I'm so psyched for the series" email the next day, but there wasn't one.))

We had a super long by after this game. We watched the guys team play, and ate, drank, sunscreened, and changed socks. (I'm officially a multiple socks per day convert.) Phillip <s>turned into</s> was replaced by Julia (their kid is sick, so they took turns), and we went into the last game with a new perspective and some new ideas.

Oklahoma. We were short handles for this game, and the wind was picking up for the first time that day, (still pretty low on the portapottie danger scale, though). We played a lot of this game with two legit handles and two pseudo-handles (plus three cutters, duh.) The thing is, everyone on the team can throw, so we really didn't have a huge problem. And it is good to not kill yourselves, you hear that handles? Won this one 11-5.

End of day one. We contemplated a sleepover at Halfmann's because she lives about 7 minutes from the fields, but chose our own beds instead. Yay home-ish tournament.

There was a little bit of worrying, as the pool had some three-way nonsense going on. We beat SLU, SLU beat JBU, and JBU beat us, but we came second in point diff by 1, so squeaked into the championship bracket.

Day two.

Our first game this morning was against Arkansas, who from third seed in the pool, beat everyone the day before. (There was some Kansas, Truman, Missouri State three-way nonsense in that pool. Kansas took the second spot.) I, for one, really didn't know what to expect coming into this game. From the beginning, it was tight, and we were kinda on and off for a while. Philip was apparently awake enough to figure things out. We played D with a little more fire all around, and by the end of the second half, were in control. 15-9 us.

SLU rematch for first place. This is the same, and 100% different from last year. Sectionals last year was miserable. We beat the Bettys in semis, then every team that still had a game left squeezed into one bathroom to be out of the wind. "Whatever you do, don't change out of your uniforms." Even though they're soaking, and you're freezing, and there's so much water in the bathroom now that you're afraid it might start raining indoors, too. SLU decided to change, so when things started up again, they pretty much threw the game just so that they could leave.

Anyways, this game was intense throughout. We started on O, but SLU broke for the first score. We traded points until we broke to make it 3-2 us. SLU was playing an H stack, feeding it up the middle to in-cuts, dump-swinging, then hucking it from both sides of the field. And they were coming down with stuff when it mattered. We were sorta just scooting down the field in an everyone-can-throw sort of way. (Everyone else calls this "calmly working it down the field.") We squeezed a lot of things cutter to cutter in the force-side corner of the endzone, though. Simultaneously, a couple of our handles were delivering the occasional superawesome deep throw. Anyways, half was 8-6 them, same as Saturday morning.

In the second half, we broke twice to tie it at 8s. Game keeps going. Cap comes on at 10-10. Game to 12 again. SLU breaks to score. 11-10 them. The next point seemed so long. (and I wasn't playing.) Every time there was a turn, things got more intense. Fookie drops a swing, and literally 10 seconds later, runs through for a D. Hillary had the most elegant two-fingered sky ever (pinky out and everything) and tied it up at 11s.

So we call a timeout. I'm pretty sure this is legit under soft cap. Just to point out to everyone that it's universe point, in case, you know, someone wasn't paying attention. This point wasn't nearly as long as the previous. Our poach-this-way defense that we started using in the second half generated a layout D for Abby. Abby hucked it to Danielle, who read the disk right to score. For a WUWU win.

I got back to the dorm and grabbed a new bar of soap to take a shower. The paper wrapper said "The ultimate point of life is joy." We proved a few things today. We can come from behind and win universe points. We can take our time on the endzone line... sometimes. Also, we have so much more depth this year. We were short a bunch of cutters this weekend, and everyone stepped it up. Watch out, Austin. We're looking to repeat at Regionals, too.

Pres Day 2010

When you find yourself in the thick of it, help yourself to a bit of what is all around you.
( ^^ Song lyrics. Gold star up for grabs!)

While a few inches of snow accumulated in St Louis and east coasters dug themselves out of several feet, I was flying with Tilt to San Diego, (southern California, for the geography challenged) for three days of frisbee. Outdoors.

It went sorta like this:

My group left for the airport around 2pm, and on the flight, Southwest asked if anyone needed some last minute Valentines Day cards. We jumped all over that and got a free card for Jizz, who had to stay behind at the last minute. Continuing with WUWU's bad luck with flying, they lost Naomi's toiletry bag, including her one-day contacts. After getting slightly lost, we made it to dinner with the crowd that had gotten in that morning. There was much oohing and aahing at the palm trees, flowers, mountains (don't yell at me. It's so flat where I live), and ambient temperature. The next morning, we got up to discover that we could see the ocean from our host's back porch. Day 1, we started off against Colorado. Cool, we thought, another team that probably hasn't had much outdoor practice time this semester. As usual, we took our time warming up in the morning, and lost this one. Whoops. Our next game was against Washington, number 2 at nationals last year. I think the attitude going into this game was closest to what Julia and Philip had for the entire tournament. It's ok to lose, just try weird things and make sure you learn a shit ton.

Lose: Check. Weird things: Check. Shit ton o' learnin': Check. This was probably the low point of the weekend. We lost intensity and focus when we fell behind. (Imagine a balloon with a really small hole in it.) We're capable of playing well, and we're capable of coming back from behind, but our brains lost this game for us well before Sonoma State scored their 13th point. Our last game was against USC. Coming off of the previous loss, we didn't play as well as we were capable of. Day one, 0-4. Wah waaaah.

We had a bye the last round, so we showered and headed off to watch the sunset on the cliffs. After dinner, a group went out to wander downtown, met a girl riding in a giant cupcake, and talked to two guys on the street who thought the world was going to end in 2012.

Day two, we were in a smaller pool with Carlton and Arizona. We lost both of those games, and landed in the 13th place bracket, meaning that we had a chance at making seed. The first bracket game was that afternoon, but we lost Lauren Krone, Cynthia, and Danielle, who wanted to make it to their Monday classes. We were left with fewer than 14 fully functional WUWUs.

The last game that day was against UC San Diego, the host team. We were warming up after a bye, and instead of the "small army" we ran around with last spring, we were tiny. Where's our team? Is this really everyone? Yep. Just like that. But that's about the time we finally pulled it together and started doing well.

We went on a run for the beginning of the second half, but Psycho started coming back with a run of their own. They couldn't make up the difference before hard cap came on, and though they won the last point, we won the game. Note: Not having to dig ourselves out of a hole is awesome. We need to do this more often.

Instead of showering right away, we went to the beach. Deuce and Naomi went right into the water, followed by me, and eventually, the rest of the team. The Pacific Ocean is really cold. It was like icing your entire body, but way more fun than having bags of actual ice taped to you. (This is probably why Monday didn't feel any worse than Sunday.) We got out, watched the sun set (Valentines Day with WUWU), then sped off to the showers, because everyone was freezing.

Day 3, we had just two games. The first was against UC Davis, who out-numbered us significantly. (Again, this is a new thing for my rookie class.) The game was 7-6 going into half, and ended on a universe point. We were finally in the right place to get things done when we needed to. This is our point. Done. We won this game, and it was pretty great.

Our last game of the tournament was a rematch against Arizona for 13th place. We wanted this game, and it was close. We fell behind in the first half, but were not down by an impossible margin. We cheered to flip cup for the second half; WUWUs have a pretty good record coming from behind in drinking games. There was some good non-drinking talk too. This is the last half of the last game that we're playing. At Pres Day. In California. If you're not putting it all out there, you should probably get on that now. We played well the second half. Really well. Hard cap went on at 10-9: if we won the next two, we won the game. Arizona won that point, with a really nice trash-picking layout in the endzone. 11-9 Arizona doesn't really convey how close the game actually was. We ended strong, and I think everyone knew it.

On the way to the car, I stopped to talk to a dad and two girls who were biking by and watching confusedly. This is ultimate frisbee. This is a tournament, not IM games. I'm here from St Louis, and these teams you're watching, they're some of the best college teams in the country... They actually seemed quite impressed. (Because UCSB and Oregon were looking spectacular.) It would make me happy if those girls ended up playing ultimate in high school or college.

Anyways, after stopping at In-N-Out (which I wasn't particularly impressed by. Blasphemy, right? Edit: Yes, Theresa thinks this is blasphemy! I'm convinced we converted several WUWU's this weekend!) we headed towards the airport in a hurry, 'cause we were running late. With some pretty sweet teamwork, we managed to return the cars, print all the boarding passes, get all the bags checked and get everyone on the plane with a few minutes to spare. Go us. This might have been the most significant accomplishment of the weekend.

Anyways, I'm giving out awards now. Without consulting anyone. If you ever decide to do a tournament write up, you get to do your own awards.

Best Sideline Talking: Elise
Most Highlight-Reel Worthy: Deuce
Good Life Choice: Naomi and Hannah
Creeper: Theresa
5 Years Old: Fookie
Made It To California?!: the owl hat

I'm not qualified to evaluate where the team is now... but if you see Tilt with a full roster and some outdoor practice time, watch out! Teams will play 4-6 games over the course of the weekend, but will also have scheduled bye rounds where their guest coaches will be able to go over drills and skills with them, review strategy, and generally give them tools that they can take back to practice. There will also be a "regular" Division I and II for those teams who want a competitive tournament experience. With 11 days left until Natties and school out, I (and all other WUWUs for that matter) should be pumped and compulsively thinking about ultimate.

The plan currently is to keep this as updated as possible with team news, pre/post tourney writeups, random musings about ultimate, etc. I know we have WUWUs interested in writing or tweaking the layout, so if you're interested just contact us.

And coming up in the next couple days (just in case you weren't already excited about this blog)..........an awesome intro of our roster!

Oh yeah, one last thing: We're going to fucking Nationals!!!
